Harry Potter’s Emma Watson Admits She Still “Treasures” J.K. Rowling Despite Controversy

By Daniel Smith 02/21/2026

Emma Watson, who became a global icon playing Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films, is now opening up about her complex feelings toward author J.K. Rowling. On a new episode of Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, Watson admitted that while she strongly supports trans rights and does not agree with Rowling’s public views, she still holds space for the woman who played such an important role in her life.

“I think the thing I’m most upset about is that conversation is never made possible. I really don't believe that by having had that experience and holding the love and support and views that I have, means that I can't and don't treasure Jo and the person that I had personal experiences with,” Watson said. “I will never believe that one negates the other and that my experience of that person, I don't get to keep and cherish… I just don't think these things are either or.”

Watson, who has long been outspoken about gender equality and human rights, stressed that her perspective comes from a place of compassion rather than division. “It’s my deepest wish that I hope people who don't agree with my opinion will love me and I hope I can keep loving people who I don't necessarily share the same opinion with,” she said, offering a hopeful vision of dialogue across divides.

What Did Emma Watson Previously Say About J.K. Rowling?

In 2020, Watson tweeted her support of the trans community without addressing Rowling directly, stating:

"Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are. I want my trans followers to know that I and so many other people around the world see you, respect you and love you for who you are."

Watson also added that she was donating money to trans charities, and implored her followers to do the same if they were in a position to do so. For many fans, Watson’s voice carries particular weight because of her iconic role as Hermione — a character synonymous with empathy, intellect, and moral courage. In navigating the Rowling controversy, Watson seems determined to live out those same qualities in real life, emphasizing understanding over cancellation, qualities which we should all aspire to live by, and fitting for the brightest witch of her age.
